Comic Con 2019: 15 Tonnes of GHG Averted

Comic Con India is the most celebrated pop culture event in the country and this year the Bengaluru Comic Con 2019 was conducted on the 16th and 17th of November, at KTPO, in Whitefield.   Saahas Zero waste had partnered with Comic Con India to make their 2018 Comic Con  go zero-waste. This year again Comic Con India partnered with Saahas Zero Waste to manage waste generated at their event to ensure sustainable and responsible handling of waste.   Waste quantities Comic Con 2019 saw a waste generation of 5066 kg, 81 % of which was recyclable dry waste. A few of the highlights include the following  -

  • Around 23% of the dry waste consists of plastic (TPF, CPF, MLP and PET)
  • A resource recovery rate of 85% was achieved through the waste management operation
  Impact   All the waste streams were sustainably handled and sent to the appropriate end-destinations. Extra efforts were taken towards complying with the BBMP rules for conduction of zero-waste events.   A total of 5066 kgs of waste was diverted from the landfill during the event and thereby averted and emission of 14.5 tonnes of Green house gases. This emission is equivalent to emissions from: Though the event was conducted across 2 days, the SZW team handled the waste till Day 4. The 2 supervisors and the 6 field staff deployed for the task of waste management were all paid overtime charges accordingly, thus assuring Comic Con India that during the event, the labour laws and more importantly the well being of the field staff were strictly accounted for.
