99% Waste Recovery at NEB Marathon
NEB Sports Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. organized a 10 km and 5 km marathon at NICE Road - Bengaluru, on the 7th of July 2019. It saw over 12,000 runners coming together to participate in the marathon. With our event waste management strategies, we were able to segregate the dry and wet waste generated during the event and averted the production of over 2 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
There were a total of nine checkpoints present at regular intervals across the 100 m stretch, in addition to a start and finish point. At the said checkpoints, participants could rest and receive medical treatment. They were provided with meals at these checkpoints.Event Strategy
Few of the sustainable practices followed at the run were, the breakfast was served to the participants via buffets, rather than providing them with packaged food, thereby bringing down the quantity of plastic and packaging waste.
Meals were served in reusable plates, as opposed to disposable plates, which would further brought down the quantity of dry waste. Water and juice was served in reusable glasses and importantly cloth banners were used instead of Flex Banners.
Wet and dry waste bins with indicative signage were deployed at all points of waste generation, i.e., the Start/Finish and the various checkpoints, to ensure waste segregation at source.Zero Waste Event Impact
A total of 768 kg of waste was generated at NEB Sports 10K Challenge. If the said quantity of waste were to be sent to a landfill, about 2.20 tonnes of GHG emissions would have been released, as a result of the unsustainable method of waste disposal.
Wet waste was taken off-site to a KSPCB-approved biogas plant to be biomethanized.
Dry waste was transported to SZW's Material recovery facility where it was segregated into 14-17 different categories. Each category was then aggregated, baled and sent to the corresponding end-destinations.
Due to the combined efforts of Saahas and NEB Sports we were able to avoid the generation of reject waste by upto 99%.Social Impact
All field staff and supervisors at Saahas Zero Waste are full-time employees of the organization and are thereby paid minimum wages on the company’s payroll.
The field staff and supervisors deployed to NEB Sports 2019 were all paid overtime wages for their services throughout the 48-hour duration.
