Plog Run with Intel & LBTC

Plogging has grown immensely popular over the past few years in India and around the world. 500 enthusiastic volunteers gathered to plog across 10 locations in Bengaluru on 14th December.   The plog was organized by Intel, in partnership with Saahas Zero Waste amd Let’s Be The Change (LBTC). The main aim of this plog run was to collect dry waste. Raising awareness about the pollution caused from the unscientific handling of waste was also an important objective of this plog. Intel and LBTC engaged with Saahas Zero Waste to ensure all of the waste collected during the plog run was managed sustainably by sending it to the right end destinations.   SZW ensured important information – safety instructions and the kind of waste to collect - was shared with the volunteers in advance to ensure adequate preparation. Reusable and recyclable HDPE bags were also handed to volunteers to collect waste in.   Waste collected per location was gathered at one aggregation point per location. SZW had deployed one Project Manager and five supervisors across the 10 locations to ensure seamless operations.   Through the plog, a total of 730 kg of waste collected by the volunteers. The waste collection system designed by the SZW comprised grouping 10 locations into 5 clusters. Five vehicles were then deployed – one vehicle for per cluster – to collect waste.   The waste was then transported to SZW’s Material recovery facility, where it was secondary sorted into 14-17 different categories. Each category is then baled and aggregated. Upon attaining a certain tonnage, each stream of dry waste is sent to the respective authorized end destination for recycling or co-processing.   The environmental impact of ensuring waste is managed sustainably is as follows:

  • All 730 kg of waste were diverted from the landfill to be recycled or co-processed
  • 2.2 metric tons of CO2 emissions were averted from being released into the atmosphere
That is, emission equivalent to the following were averted:
  • 3,361 km driven by a passenger vehicle
  • 58 litres of diesel consumed
  • 2,80,527 phones charged
  • 1 barrels of oil consumed
  • 6,012 kg of coal burned
At the end of the event, the SZW team had held a sensitization session for the volunteers to raise awareness on sustainable waste management and the importance of reducing the quantum of waste generated.
